Onteniente

Clark Hulings considered this painting to be one of the best things he ever created. It was given the gold medal by the Allied Artists in 1967, and it is one of his most sought after works.

Hulings was known for his technique and his rustic compositions. Well, Onteniente displays copious amounts of both. His depiction of this ancient hilltop town in Central Spain has all the texture of rough, stuccoed walls, uneven terra cotta roof tiles, wild foliage and delicate laundry, underneath a dramatic sky that delivers a chiaroscuro punch. Everyone who sees it wants to buy it, but the original remains in the family and is not for sale!
