Clark Hulings' Grand Canyon pieces, although there are only a few of them, represent some of his most sought-after subject matter. This painting was from the fall of 1967, when the US Department of the Interior and The Society of Illustrators commissioned paintings of all of the National Parks: Hulings had the honor of taking on the Grand Canyon. He and Mary Hulings tried flying up in a helicopter to get an aerial view, which didn't work because it spooked the mules. Hulings then took five days to explore the whole South Rim. This stunning work—showing five pack mules and their rider at the beginning of the Kaibab Trail—became one of several masterful paintings created on that first trip.
